This role is for a leader, a strategist, and a hands-on engineer who thrives on solving complex problems. As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll join our Cloud Operations team to support robust teams that support data science workflows for thousands of users.

In addition to your core responsibilities on the Cloud Operations team, you'll be flexible and adaptable, occasionally engaging with various internal teams in a consulting capacity. You'll use your expertise to help different product and engineering teams understand cloud-based architectures in Azure, AWS, and GCP. You will act as a technical advisor, helping them design and implement solutions that get the most value from our products while reducing time to value.

You'll be a key part of a team that creates scalable, cloud-integrated solutions, helping enterprises optimize their data workflows in an environment that values growth, innovation, and teamwork. This role involves direct interaction with internal teams, making it a great fit for someone who enjoys unblocking others and mentoring their peers.

What You’ll Own

  • Operational excellence, reliability, and security of our products, advocating for investments to improve them.
  • The design and development of robust cloud-based architectures, such as an AWS EKS reference architecture that will be used by our customers.
  • Ensuring new features are designed with operational considerations, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability in mind.
  • Evaluating new technologies as the scale and surface area of the product evolve, so you can participate in technology selection and implementation.

What You’ll Help With

  • Mentoring and consulting with other teams to help them incorporate cloud best practices and sound architectural decisions into their products and services.
  • Ensuring appropriate metrics and monitoring are in place for actionable alerting with a high signal-to-noise ratio.
  • Improving our infrastructure as code (using Pulumi) and continuous integration and deployment pipelines.
  • Improving the security, performance, scalability, observability, and reliability of existing backend services.
  • Load and performance testing of our products across different cloud-based environments.

What You’ll Teach

  • Anti-patterns learned from prior experiences handling operational incidents.
  • The tools, tips, and tricks that make your professional life easier.
  • Help others on the team get acquainted with infrastructure components you have expertise in, such as the Azure and Kubernetes ecosystem.
  • Aid in reducing the support burden of the product by helping the team incorporate proper instrumentation, logging, and distributed tracing.

What You’ll Learn

  • A breadth of AWS, Azure, and GCP services.
  • Metrics and monitoring at scale using Datadog.
  • Infrastructure as code using Pulumi and other technologies.
  • The Posit products and how their data science customers work, along with open-source tools like R and Python.

About You

  • You have 5+ years of professional experience writing software to manage cloud infrastructure at scale.
  • You are a natural leader who takes initiative and can drive complex projects to completion.

Skills: Expertise in infrastructure-as-code technologies, and familiarity with cloud-based storage and network management. You are comfortable with languages like Go and Python.

What to Expect

Within 1 month:

  • Get to know the Cloud Operations team and Workbench team.
  • Follow our onboarding process and contribute improvements to it.
  • Participate in architecture overviews to gain familiarity with Posit.
  • Deliver your first changes to our infrastructure or microservices.
  • Begin your first embedded consulting engagement with the Workbench team, helping them with a key architecture decision.

Within 3 months:

  • Review our existing architecture and provide feedback and suggestions for possible improvements.
  • Contribute to a small team building out a new feature or realistic test environment.

Within 12 months:

  • Own or demonstrate expertise in multiple areas of our infrastructure and services.
  • Research problems and new technologies and effectively communicate findings to the team.
  • Propose and lead significant infrastructure projects.
  • Become a trusted technical leader and consultant for multiple teams across the engineering organization.

This hiring range reflects base salary and assumes that the job will be performed in the United States.
